Hands were breaking up through the ground all around her as Jenny ran through the woods. The trees that had looked so serene when they first arrived were now twisted and dark and closing her in.
They'd hiked through the woods along the path and admired all of the nature around them. The trees, the squirrels, the sounds - it couldn't have been better.
They made camp in a small clearing, and Roger set up the tend while she gathered wood to start a fire later. Everything was perfect, and she was finally beginning to enjoy their vacation. It was Roger's idea to go camping, and she'd originally protested it. She never imagined that she could enjoy the wilderness so much until she got in the middle of it.
Things started to go horribly wrong just after sunset. They were sitting on the ground talking to each other and watching the fire when they heard some rustling behind them. They looked and saw that it was a rather disheveled man hobbling towards them. Naturally, they assumed he was a lost hiker or an injured camper or the like and rushed to help him.
In the dim light, they had trouble discerning the extent of his injuries, but Roger could still see that the man's left arm was swinging lifelessly at his side. His face was covered in old cuts and dried, black blood. Something terrible had happened to him. Yet when they got in close, instead of asking for help or telling them what had happened, he lunged at Roger - biting and clawing at him. Reflexively, Roger shoved him backwards where he fell over a log. The couple exchanged confuses looks between concerned ones towards their visitor.
Then they heard more rustling. More disshelved people climbed out of the woods on all sides of them. They were surrounded.
Backing in towards the middle, Roger tried to grab some of the logs from the fire, but only succeeded in burning himself. He picked up some small rocks and lobbed them at the intruders, screaming at them to get back, but they had little effect. Even the original man was back on his feet and once again hobbling towards them.
That's when the first hand appeared. It shot up out of the ground right at Roger's feet and grabbed onto his ankle. Jenny screamed. Roger tried to kick it off and run, but it yanked backwards and pulled him to the ground. More hands broke up out of the earth and pinned him down completely. He struggled to move, but it was no use. The soil convulsed underneath him and then seemed to open up as he was dragged under. Jenny was frozen in fear as Roger screamed for help. Then the ground closed up again and he was gone.
She turned and ran out of the clearing, she just had to get out of the woods before it was too late for her as well.
